About this list
For a casual game in Tokyo, the evenings are the easiest way in. Chess Center UENO in Kita-Ueno is open on Thursday from five until ten and on Saturday and Sunday afternoons, with tickets bought in advance. Tokyo Check Mates plays rapid and blitz every Wednesday at an English pub in Udagawachō, Kōenji Chess Club meets twice a month at The Den, and a Tuesday chess and shogi party runs weekly in Kanda-Ogawamachi.
Clubs meeting once or twice a month in community halls cover Minato, Chōfu, Machida, Yokohama and Kashiwa, and the federation's tournaments fill Kyurian in Ōimachi on many weekends. The Tuesday party meets at ENGLISH ONLY CAFE. This page also lists board-game cafés in Ebisu, Ueno, Ikebukuro, Sugamo and Koganei and a play space in Nakano whose shelves include a chess set among hundreds of other games; they hold no chess evening of their own.
