Chess tournaments in Tokyo and nearby 18

Most of Japan's national chess championships are played in Tokyo, and most of those at one address: Kyurian, the Shinagawa ward public hall beside Ōimachi station. The Japan Chess Federation holds the national championship (Argentina Cup) and the Golden Week Open there in May, the youth and cadet championships in April, the women's and senior championships in July, the rapid and team championships in the autumn, Level-Up tournaments for lower-rated players several times a year, and a Christmas Chess Party in December.

Elsewhere, the Japan Open moves to X-Wave Makuhari in Chiba city in 2026, a summer kids' tournament is held at the National Olympics Memorial Youth Center in Yoyogi, and clubs organise their own tournaments in Akabane, in Kashiwa and in Tsurumi, Yokohama. Shimokitazawa and Bashamichi in Yokohama add a free street chess day each year. Dates are those given on each edition's notice.
