About this list
Yokohama, the neighbouring port city, has a chess life of its own. Yokohama Chess Club meets twice a month on Saturday afternoons in the café space of the YWCA Yokohama in Naka ward, with a beginners' lecture at the start and a monthly children's class in the same ward. Kawasaki Chess Club, despite its name, holds its monthly meetings at the Yakō district centre in Tsurumi ward.
The Kanagawa Chess Championship, a regional qualifier for the national championship, was played at that Tsurumi centre in March 2026. Every year on the last day of a street festival, Bashamichi square in Kannai hosts a free open-air chess day with a knockout tournament and a lecture, cancelled in rain. The Keio University Chess Club plays at the Hiyoshi campus in Kōhoku ward.
